Domain names (URLs)

A domain name or URL is simply the address of your website

For UK Church websites the recommended ending is .org.uk

Although the following endings are not strictly adhered to they will give you an idea of their intended use…

Choosing a domain name

It is advisable to keep your domain name fairly short - it will need to be easy to remember and since it ought to appear on all your church publicity you won't want it to take up more space than it needs to.

Try to stick to two or three words - for example www.stjohnshillingdon.org.uk

Make it easy to remember - if someone sees it on your notice board you don't want them to have forgotten by the time they get home.

Steer clear of domains that look like they are hosted on your home Internet provider - for example www.mychurch.blueyonder.co.uk - you will want your site to look as though it belongs to the church rather than an individual.

Be prepared to get creative when finding a domain name - a lot of churches have websites these days and you may find that your first choices are already in use.

Purchasing a domain name

If CWS are building and hosting your site for you we recommend purchasing the domain from 123-reg. This allows you to own the domain but point it at our webservers - if you ever want to have your site hosted elsewhere that will enable you to do so easily.

If another design company is building and or hosting your site they will advise you on the best course of action.
